Short Writings

The following are short writings where I was working on description.

1.It was the beginning of summer.  The veil of dawn had yet to enclose the world, yet the excitement of day was long since gone.  Night was just peeking her head out, and her violet hair lay on the horizon, making the earth seem to glow.  A thousand twinkling eyes stared down at me from the heavens, with a hint of mockery in their glare.  A cold breeze whispered in my ear, chilling me with the stories it told.  The trees, now just giant shadows in the night, seemed to bend and bow in mock respect.  I stammered on, still dazed by the crash.  The world seemed to lurch out at me. Wooden claws snared at my clothes.  A sudden chill ran through me as I stepped into a stream, cold and swift as death.  I quickly yanked my foot out in panic, and fell backwards, my fall broken by a cushion of needles.  A coin fell from my hand, a token from the train I had just left.  I heard the stream swallow it.  I pushed myself up and cautiously stepped over the liquid snake.  It hissed and sprayed my leg with its venom.  I heard a cry. A trick of the night, I convinced myself.  But still, the woods seemed to call my name.  I started to run, my heart growing faster with each pounding step.  I head the wind cry out after me.  It streaked through the trees, chasing me, calling me.  A tree reached out its foot to stop me.  I fell in a heap on the ground.  Suddenly, warm hands were turning me over.  I saw a familiar face.  As my grandmother smiled at me, I could see the world lighten up.  She picked me up.  Arm in arm, we walked slowly on into the sunrise.

2.  A river sat beside me, whispering secrets into my ear.  All around, the sea of grass was filled with waves, and the trees preformed a jubilant dance.  My hair, as ribbons, waved in the wind, and my dress clung to me as if it were afraid of flying away.  The sun was closing its burning eye, and its speckled eyelashes twinkled like a thousand far off candles as the lilac colored music of the heavens played it's silent lullaby.  I picked a wildflower and admired its delicate beauty and exquisite subtleties. The wind soon picked it up and twirled it between its fingers, tossing it here and there.  It soon grew tired of its new toy and dropped it into the river, who delighted in bedecking every  wave it could with the adornment.  Time flowed by like the petals of the flower in the river, and the sun's sleepy eye finally closed; The eyelid of night fell.  All this time, growing more and more prominent as the old tyrant, the sun, grew dim, was the philosopher of the skies; the moon.  Spots of old, scholarly age showed on it's luminescent skin and a deeper glory than that of the shallow beauty of the sun radiated all around.  The stars dimmed in respect for their superior. The moon looked at it's self in the mirror of the lake, and cast it's light over the whole world, thus illuminating it with both wisdom and beauty.  I lay here, unnoticed by nature, a mere speck on this teardrop world, and I wonder how anyone could ever see what I have seen, and not truly stop with wonder.  For once nature has shared the grace of the land, the wisdom of the moon, the song of the skies, and the secrets of the earth, the only thing that will ever seem trivial is the worries of our race and kind.

3. He walked slowly between the stalls of cotton candy, smelling the sticky sweet air.  A child brushed past him, crying about her lost doll.  The people moving by were like a river, not caring about him, carving their path along the river bank.
A key droped from the sky.  He bent down to pick it up, and yet the moment he touched it the key vanished.  It appeared again on the table next to him.  He reached for it, and again, it dissapeared.  A child nearby was eating a hotdog when the key appeared on her head.  He made a mad swipe at her, causing the child to scream.  By the time people had stopped staring, the key was gone.  He looked around, but could not see it anywhere.
As he walked home that night, the key casually slipped in and out of his mind.  Several times, he thought he saw it, but alas, it was just a trick of the sunset.
